So there I am after a year of playing around with my first Batman costume. I had a some outings under my belt, couple birthday parties, special events, and the entire time I felt completely awkward in the spandex. I decided to upgrade the suit with a couple of key pieces – the belt, the bodysuit and the cape.
For the body suit I found a guy on the Replica Prop Forum that was selling prints of basic muscle texturing on full body spandex. This is how I met Tracey, a good friend of mine as well as my go to for all my seamstress needs! Admittedly, I wasn’t sure how to present this pattern to her as I have NEVER had anything tailored or sewn for me in my life… and it was skin tight spandex. Tracey was very err… accommodating and we managed to get the piece put together. Now, The challenge when you order pieces like this online is that you can never try it on or actually see it first. So it’s a pretty big gamble. The print came out considerably lighter than I was expecting… it was almost white! To top that off the chest was VERY tight and distorted the bat logo as a result. But in my eyes it was perfect!
With the cape I was thinking “how cool would it be to be able to spread the wings like a flying bat!” So I got Tracey to add some slips to the cape so I could stick wooden dowels in there and BAM instant bat wings. This is one of those ideas that sounds really cool … but in practice is actually a painful nightmare. Why you ask? Try holding your arms about your head for an hour and come see me after haha.
